GENERAL APPEARANCE

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a dog of medium size, robust body, short coat and smooth, well-toned muscles.

This breed is strong and athletic at the same time.

The body is slightly longer than high, although the female may be longer than the male.

The length of the front leg (if we measure from the elbow to the ground) is almost equal to ½ the height of the dog, from ground to shoulder.

The head is of medium length, with wide, flat skull and wide, deep muzzle.

The ears are small to medium sized, positioned above the head and may be natural or cut.

The relatively short tail is positioned low in the pelvis, thick at the base and gradually tapering to a spike.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is acceptable in any color or color combination other than Merle.

This breed combines strength and athleticism with flexibility and grace. An American Pit Bull Terrier should never appear bulky and too muscular or thin bones and lanky.

The APBT must have the potential to be a hunting dog that can bite and holds firmly to wrestle (push and pull) with large game and breathe comfortably while doing his job.

Balance and harmony of all members of the body of APBT, are important elements of the breed.

Very Serious Faults: Any disproportionate, excessive characteristic (such as short legs, very thick bones, massive head or body) which reduces the working capacity.

FEATURES

The essential characteristics of an American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence and zest for life. This breed is eager to please their owners and brimming with enthusiasm. The APBT are excellent family companions and have always been known for their love for children. Because most APBT exhibit a degree of aggression towards other dogs and because of their strong physical conformation, they need an owner who is diligent to socialize and train them. The natural flexibility of the breed makes an excellent climber and so the tall fence is necessary.

The APBT is not a good choice for a guard dog, as they tend to be extremely friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is not typical of the breed and is totally undesirable. This breed is doing very well in competitions of any kind, due to its high intelligence and appetite for exhibiting work.
